Reclaiming
Space - What’s in a name?
In a world where
all space is advertising space, having a free space for expression
is not only desirable but absolutely necessary. Whether through
street art, songs or letters to the press, reclaiming space for
personal and creative expression is a must. It is a struggle we
need to undertake if we want to be more than mere workers and consumers.
It can also be a way to counter the messages that are thrown at
us every day. Why is everybody trying so hard to sell me every little
useless thing?
I don’t
ask to see advertising billboards and neither do I expect to enter
a coffee jar when boarding a bus. I don’t need to be bored
stiff with adverts prior to a movie and neither do I want ‘free’
Sunday ad-magazines that say nothing. The dual nature of the messages
imparted through the lovely images is a little less conspicuous
than their avarice. All adverts are superficially different while
being fundamentally the same. They promote a different product while
selling the same idea. Excessive consumption and consumerism are
reinforced with every scantly clad woman on a car and every celebrity
endorsement of sweatshop trainers. The happy perfect world they
present mocks the contrasting reality outside it.
