Recording
'Reclaiming Space' - (page 2)
Recording started
in July 2006 when I recorded the first batch of tracks. Carrying
equipment up to the studio required hiring a van as back then, both
Mike (the drummer) and I were committed non-drivers. Needless to
say carrying a jumbo bass drum on a local bus would have been insane,
if not physically impossible. So the van proved to be a vital addition
to the recording plan. Despite this obvious logistical functionality,
however, it will be best remembered for its unconventional look
and driver. As the cliché would have it, the company that
hired the van had some problems with their normal luggage van and
they sent in what looked like the offspring of a dingy ice-cream
van and the Beatles' magical mystery tour bus. We looked so out
of place in this van that upon our arrival the producer thought
somebody drove in by mistake. The driver fit in perfectly with the
van though. I remember him to be a little bit on the wacky side,
particularly after driving the van straight into a field adjacent
to the studio and getting the truck stuck in the soil. If anything,
it was surely an interesting way to start the recording.
